When buying a used car use a checklist so you don't get caught with costly repairs later. This checklist will tell what to look for from interior, exterior and engine compartment.

Vehicle Interior
- Check all upholstery overhead, seats and dash board.
- Operation of all windows, door locks and seat belts.
- With auto running check all gauges and odometer.
- Check windshield wipers, heat and air, radio / CD player.
Vehicle Exterior
- Overall condition of paint, dents or body damage.
- Condition of tires, how much tread on tires.
- Check all lights, headlights, brake, parking, back up, blinkers.
- Condition of all windows chips or cracks.
- Check the function of all doors, open and closing.
- Check cargo or trunk condition, jack, spare tire, lug wrench.
Engine Compartment
- Check all fluid levels if possible, at least check oil.
- Condition of all belts and hoses.
- With auto running listen for any engine noises or leaks.
Test Driving
- Apply brakes to make sure auto stops good and no squeaks.
- Make sure auto doesn't pull to either side or shimmy.
- Test shocks by driving on a rough road, listen for any noises.
- Make sure check engine light is not on.
- Check if transmission or clutch is slipping.
